Gentle Woman, Quiet Light
Gentle woman, quiet light does not mean that Mary
wasn’t also a resourceful, strong woman.
Quiet gentleness should not be confused with
weakness; no Mary was a strong woman, mother, and
servant leader. Look at the examples of her mothering
that we find in Scripture.
Each example shows Mary as loving but firm with Jesus.
She guides with a balanced hand, never pushing her
agenda but always guiding Jesus toward what Mary has
discerned to be God’s plan for her son. (John 2 1 – 4)
“On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in
Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.
When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And)
Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet
come." His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you."
God's plan, the future, was not fully revealed to her, but she could see that something
was, or could be in store for her son, just as our children’s callings from God are not
fully revealed to us.
